What we eat has a great impact on our overall health and wellbeing. Knowing our food and what it contains is a first step towards making the right food choice. Every food contains something called a nutrient, which is supposed to nouris your body. But how we consume these nutrients determines it’s effect whether positive or negative on our health.
To avoid consuming nutrients wrongly, let’s learn the basics.
The 2 types of nutrients which are Macronutrient and micronutrients
Macronutrients: They form the group of nutrients that the body needs in large quantities. More is good with macronutrients. This is because they mainly produce energy for the body. Theefore macronutrients are needed on a daily basis for good nutritional balance.
But over eating macronutrients can lead to obesity which is a risk factor to a number of disease conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other heart problems. The key is in moderation.
1. Carbohydrates eg. Corn, rice, yam, bread,etc
2. Protein also known as body building foods. Eg Meat, eggs, fish, etc.
3. Fats eg, Cheese, butter, etc.
Micronutrients on the other hand are nutrients that the body needs in small quantities. This means micronutrients are not to be eaten daily like the macronutrients.
Unlike the macronutrients, over consumption of micronutrients can become toxic for the body. This means it can cause damage to the organs of the body.
Micronutrients include vitamins and minerals. Eat them in small quantities to yield healthy results.
